Structure: If+ sub +v If+ sub + verb (past) + other words + sub + would/could/might+ verb (present) + other words.
- If he worked hard, ......
If he worked hard, he could pass the examination.
- We would not miss the train if....... We would not miss the train if we started in time.
C.3rd Conditional
If+ Past perfect+ Past perfect + would have/could have/might have + Past participle.
Structure: If+ sub + had + past participle +other words + sub+ would+ have/could have/might have + past participle + other words.
1.If I had tried....
If I had tried I could have stood first in the examination.
2.If I had met you, ......
If I had met you, I could have given you the message.
Note: Third Conditional may begin with 'Had'. In that case, we should apply the same rule of third conditional.
Structure: Had + sub + past participle + other words + sub + would le + other words + sub + would have/could have/might have + past participle + other words.
1.Had I been the king....
Had I been the king, I would have taken good care of my people.
2.Had I seen you at school....
Had I seen you at school, I could have given you the notes.
Warning: If 'had' is used without a 'past participle' the rule will be different. For example,
1.Had I the wings of a bird, ......
Had I the wings of a bird, I would fly in the sky.
2.Had I a lot of money...
Had I a lot of money, I would establish a school in my village.
Rule 14:
Would that/I wish
To express a wish that will never be fulfilled, we use 'would that' or 'I wish’. The next verb must be in the 'past form' or 'were'.
1.Would that we....
Would that we met ten years ago.
2.I wish I.....
I wish I were a bird.
